Homework 8 was merely your participation in last week's projects. If you missed only one class you received a 50, and if you missed both you recieved a 0. Everyone else received a 100. If you didn't make a 100 you can listen to a Freakonomics or Planet Money podcast, write a 500 word summary of the podcast (making sure it is obvious you listened to the whole thing), and briefly describe it orally to your classmates. If you missed two classes you must do two of these if you want a 100. Please let me know which podcast episode you wish to listen to before you do it, so that no two students listen to the same one.

[Regarding his first consulting job]…[My boss] gave me a big stack of data…[and said]…we need to figure out how to help them get their drugs approved faster…I turned to him and said, so what do you want me to do? And he said we are not paying you all this money for me to tell you what to do. You’re just supposed to figure it out. Of all the things I learned [in consulting] that was one of the most important: that you actually are supposed to think…If you reflect back [to college] we never ask kids to really think. The secret to getting good grades in college is to memorize a bunch of stuff. The idea that now I had to have an original thought was shocking.

Announcements

The following students did not complete the student information sheet, it appears, and needs to do so immediately: Spencer Lawrence, Bailey Garland.

I am very disappointed in students who only listed 3 or 4 survey items on part B of the class worksheet on August 22. That is evidence of someone who wants to do only the bare minimum, and thus I would not trust any data they collected or data analysis they performed. Do better and show you are worthy of trust.

Homework 1 is due August 29 at the beginning of class.

Today you will be given an ID number to be used specifically for this class. Keep this stored somewhere you can access any time (like your smartphone). I will be asking you to use it occasionally, and with no advanced warning.

For next class (on August 22) we will meet at the Colvin Annex. Each student will attempt a number of basketball shots and we will record the percent made. Later we will crunch the numbers on these shots to study what determines shooting ability. It is especially important that everyone attend this day and shoot, as we need data on people who are not experienced or are poor at shooting. This activity is mandatory. If you miss this class you must make it up by going to the gym outside of class with my assistant to perform the activity.

Why we study supply and demand: Meet Lindsey Kuzma

Why we study supply and demand: Meet Lindsey Kuzma

Lindsey Kuzma is a market analyst specializing in the market for base oil, which I think is a by-product of oil refineries. Koch knew what they were doing when they hired her. I didn't know her as an undergrad but I have seen her performance and wish she had taken my classes! She spends most all of her time in Excel, studying base oil prices, with a particular emphasis on long-term fundamentals. Each week, she participates in a supply and demand meeting where they discuss the supply and demand of base oil. She is expected to understand the big picture of the base oil market, where the market is heading, and must communicate this understanding to others clearly—that is her job! So when teaching supply and demand, and you feel the need to motivate its importance, simply introduce the students to Lindsey Kuzma!
