By the way, I didn't mean to schedule the exam right after the Superbowl. If someone had said something about it I would have changed the date.
Students who did not take the Exam on 2/3 because of the monster snowstorm must take it Tuesday, 2/4 (unless they made arrangements with Bailey before the blizzard). Bailey will be in his office from 8:30 until 5 PM. Stop by his office (no later than 4:00) when you can on 2/4 to take the exam. No need to make an appointment. If his door is shut just knock. If his door is open but he is not in his office, wait.
Before class on 2/5 print off all the practice questions at the beginning of Chapter 3 and all sections of Chapter 4. Bring these to class (or if you use the iPad, have them stored on an app that allows you to write on it, like Notability).

We are using what should be an improved attendance system. At the beginning of class one sign in sheet will be given to each row, in each section (the middle, the north, and the south sections). Students in this row/section should sign it, pass it down the line, and leave it on the floor at the end of the row for TA Cara to pick up. This should not take long, making sure everyone has ample time to sign it. Also, it allows us to count the number of signatures for each row and compare it to the number of students on each row, thereby preventing fraud. I hope you approve of the new system.

Because I have had so many students wish to do an honors contract for this class, I have created one project for everyone to do. The draft instructions are at this site. Please read and let me know Friday after class if you still wish to do a contract.
As of 10:10 AM on January 15, 2014, the individuals listed here submitted Homework 1. If you think you submitted before 10:10 AM but your name doesn't appear come see me after class. If you didn't get Homework 1 in on time, no worries, just do it as fast as you can. For Homework 1 but only Homework 1 there is no penalty for late submissions. I will update the spreadsheet periodically, and the top of the sheet will always let you know exactly when it was updated.

For students wishing to complete an honors contract
I have had so many students request an honors contract that I need to have every student do the same thing, or else I simply do not have time to accommodate them all (and I want to, as I know finding honors hours can be difficult).
Thus, I thought of a way for all students to participate in a memorable and valuable learning experience without excessive work on my part (or yours, for that matter!). In fact, this idea is for us to become partners. You help me with my research, and I help you complete your honors contract.
The idea
This semester I am administering surveys to a representative sample of Americans on their views towards different dieting strategies and any experiences they have had dieting. Its major goal is to understand the role meat, dairy, and eggs plays in helping people lose weight on a low-carb diet. You can help me acquire a sample of students to include by doing the following.
- Complete online training on protecting human subjects in research and submit to me paper or electronic materials indicated you completed the CITI training at http://compliance.vpr.okstate.edu/IRB/training.aspx
- Administer 10 of these surveys
and 10 of these surveys to OSU students.
- You may recruit students however you like. They can be your friends, club members, frat-brothers, anyone, so long as they are OSU students and haven't already taken one of these surveys.
- Once someone is recruited, make sure you give them the proper information about their rights as a subject. This is done by giving
this sheet for them to read.
- Then have them fill out this sheet to ensure they will not complete more than one survey (as many of you might have the same friends).
- Once the surveys are completed, I will have you enter the data online using Google spreadsheets.
- Then I require (and this is a strict requirement) all students to meet with me as a group on the afternoon of April 26 (the Saturday before pre-finals week), where we will crunch the numbers and talk about what the survey tells us. We will also talk about the survey questions, to help you understand how consumer research is performed. Do not agree to do an honors contract if you cannot meet with me and the others on April 26.

Homework 1 is due by the beginning of class on January 15. This is simply a student information sheet, providing me with some background information on you. It also gives us some practice at using Google forms for homeworks, as I have not used them with 200 students yet. Complete the homework by going to the form at this link and answering all the question. Make sure you use the AGEC 1113 password given to you on January 13.
Schedule to begin class:
Jan 15: Dr. Norwood will present
Jan 17: Dillon Yosten (personal words of inspiration about living a moral, meaningful life)
Jan 20: no class
Jan 22: Sammy Perry (words of wisdom from parent on managing money)
Jan 24: Elizabeth Farney (words of wisdom from parent on a healthy relationship with spouse)
Welcome to the class! I am honoured to be your teacher and hope you enjoy and value the class.
Print these handouts
and these handouts (or save them as electronic copies you can write on) and bring them to future classes.
Covered in class
This being the first day of class, I went over the
syllabus but did not distribute hard copies.
Gave each student a piece of paper with their name and their password for the class. It also contains my website baileynorwood.com. Keep this with you (I suggest taking a copy of it with your smartphone so you always have it), as you will be needing to use your CWID and password throughout the class. It looked like
this sample.
Presented this lecture.
